Can You Spot A Centipede?

Centipedes are often mistaken for millipedes by the untrained eye. Centipedes in your house have more of a yellowish to dark brown color in their bodies and, sometimes even a neon bluish color to their legs. Their legs in fact extend further from their bodies making them look bigger than they really are.

The Florida Blue Centipede is the only species of centipede that is native to Florida. They are an aggressive insect that feeds on any other insect they can overpower including roaches, termites, snails and worms. They are actually good for keeping harmful unwanted pests under control and are not considered dangerous or harmful to humans. They generally get to be about 2.5 inches long and are very fast movers.

Are Centipedes Dangerous?

As mentioned before, centipedes can be helpful in the elimination of the pests you definitely do not want in your home. Centipedes are hungry little hunters. There is no threat of any real danger. However, centipedes are venomous and can bite and sting you if they feel threatened. If this does happen it can cause swelling and be quite painful. If you see a centipede, we recommend to leave it alone. Don't touch it or pick it up.

Centipedes are attracted to your home for just a couple of reasons actually. Florida's warm humid weather and food. Centipedes are voracious eaters and will consume all the Florida bugs they can eat. Because centipedes feed on these other pests, it could mean there is more than likely some other type of pest problem going on in your home. Similar to earwigs, centipedes also like moisture, meaning that there might be leaky plumbing somewhere in the house. Super D Pest Control can come out and inspect your home to determine which of the two issues it might be. Either way, we can provide centipede removal in order to keep the multi-legged creates at bay.
